Protecting the lowest paid from Coronavirus Economic Consequences

Responding to today’s speech from the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, I pointed out that “the least well off have suffered disproportionately with the health effects of this virus… they must not pay the price of the economic consequences.”

I asked the Chancellor to “assure that the cost of these measures will not be borne by the poor and low paid, instead will be met by those with wealth and assets, whether in land or property here, or in tax havens abroad”

The Chancellor didn’t answer the question – choosing instead to highlight the government’s work on tax evasion and avoidance.

My colleagues and I will keep fighting to make sure that the worst off in society do not pay twice for the Coronavirus – once with their health and secondly with their already tight income.
